Crystal Cruises has also outfitted the Serenity with ice-detecting radar, specially designed searchlights and thermal imaging equipment to help detect ice and other hazards at night. The Serenity’s captain and bridge team will attend ice-navigation training before the cruise, and two Canadian ice pilots will be aboard to assist.
Alana Ingram, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard, said the ship’s transit through American waters is via a “deep, ice-free” route for that time of the year, posing little risk.
